History:
The Hope and Healing Foundation has been in existance since 2001. Jan was a single volunteer with Mercy Ships            ( www.mercyships.org ) at that time. Mercy Ships operates a fleet of Hospital Ships, which work mainly in Africa where they dock for periodes up to 10 months in a port  and during those months, they provide first-world healthcare and surgeries completely free of charge for those who would never be able to pay for a surgery.
In 2004 Jan married Elizabeth Aquino Rojas, who is from the Dominican Republic and had been with Mercy Ships since 1994 as volunteer.
In 2006 daughter Grace Isabella was born!
Since 2001, Jan and Elizabeth have been working in different countries such as Honduras, Dominican Republic, Belize, Liberia, Guinea, Congo and Madagascar.
Elizabeth has worked many years in the Evanglism team within Mercy Ships, and later as Teacher-Assistant in the International School on board.
Jan started as an Able Seaman (sailor) in 2001. In 2004 he gained his Deck Officer license and became Third Officer. From 2012 to 2015 Jan worked on board as Chief Officer, and from September 2015 until June 2016 he served as Captain onboard the 'Africa Mercy'.
From 2016 to 2019 the Tuinier family served in the Dominican Republic where the focus was on building up a food ministry at a local garbage dump as well as different Community Development Projects connected to Discipleship Training Programs.
Since August 2019 they moved to the Netherlands where they are in a season of preparation to move to Texas, USA as Jan has started a job with Mercy Ships as Safety Manager. The expectation is that somewhere in the end of 2021 the actual move can take place to Texas, pening visa outcome.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the Hope and Healing Foundation remains committed to bring Hope and Healing in the lives of people in the Dominican Republic, under supervision of Jan and Elizabeth.
